Summer Splendor
Niseko explodes into life after the long winter season, transforming into a natural green wonderland. Wildflowers bloom, the rivers fill up with both trout and white water rafters and the temperature rises to a comfortable 25ºC. The local farms are in full swing producing fresh produce for the local restaurants. Niseko is the perfect place to escape the summer heat and relax with nature.
Summer is the season of outdoor fun in Niseko. White water rafting on the local rivers is a great way to cool off and see the beauty of the area. The local golf courses also offer great views of the surrounding mountains and are kept in superb condition. For the more adventurous, hiking the local mountains is a great way to get some exercise and the views from the peaks are not to be missed.
The summer months in Niseko are also a great time to taste the fine locally grown produce. Most of the local restaurants source all their vegetables locally making for fresh, delicious meals – which is another great reason to visit Niseko in the summer!
Rafting is a fantastic activity for the whole family to enjoy in the green season. Don a helmet and life jacket and race down the rapids of the Shiribetsu River with a qualified guide. Our team recommends Hanazono rafting, with their years of experience in the area. If you’re looking for a thrilling adventure, visit in the Spring when the snowmelt creates high river levels and faster rapids, or if you are looking for a more relaxing float down the river, visit in the late Summer and Fall, where you can see the forest in full bloom as you raft, or the stunning Autumn leaves contrasted against the bright blue water.
Niseko is a golfing paradise in Summer, with 3 main courses to give you plenty of variety on your golfing getaway. Enjoy spectacular views of Mt Yotei from the green, gorgeous white birch forests and comfortable Summer days that don’t go over 25ºC. Couple a morning tee time with a relaxing afternoon onsen session in the clubhouse, and you have a day of golf you’ll never forget.
With wide open paths, beautiful vistas and quiet forest roads, Niseko is a wonderful place to bring your bike and explore on the ground. Give yourself a challenge and compete in the Niseko Classic or Hanazono Hill Climb races, or take it easy and ride around Mt Yotei, stopping at all the natural spring water stations along the way. Mountain biking is also available, so you can feel the rush as you descend down Mt Niseko Annupuri or Asahigaoka in Kutchan with views of Mt Yotei you’re sure to remember for a lifetime.
There are plenty of other Summer activities to enjoy in Niseko, especially for families! Choose from an endless selection of fun activities like indoor rock climbing, stand-up-paddleboarding, sea kayaking, pizza making classes, hiking, yoga or fishing in the river and nearby ocean.
Enjoying Japanese-style BBQ is also a must in Summer, with many Japanese people enjoying friends and family’s company while grilling delicious meat in the great outdoors. You can rent a BBQ set from our team, and purchase meat and vegetables from nearby markets like Lucky and Co-Op.
Summer festivals or matsuri in Japanese are the highlights of the Summer event calendar. Visit the town centers in Kutchan, Hirafu and Niseko to meet the local community, taste excellent local street food, play carnival games and enjoy live music. If you visit Niseko in August, you can’t miss the Kutchan Jaga Festival, the biggest matsuri of the year.
